Short range wireless refers to radio technologies that work over a limited distance, such as Bluetooth, NFC, ultra wideband, and WiFi Direct. Proximity payment uses them to establish that two parties are physically near.
The longer version
Short range wireless is the family of standards built for communication across a room or less rather than across a city. Each standard trades range, power, and precision differently, which makes some better for a deliberate tap and others better for sensing nearness at a distance of a few metres.
In proximity payment the signal has one job: prove closeness. NFC needs a near touch, Bluetooth Low Energy reaches across a room at low power, ultra wideband measures distance finely, and WiFi Direct links devices directly over tens of metres. The method is deliberately signal agnostic, so it can use whichever fits the setting.
The signal establishes presence, but it does not carry the payment. Once nearness is confirmed, the transaction routes through a central server, which keeps the sensitive part off the local radio link entirely.
